Dear Mr. Wells,

The success of our nation’s defense is dependent on the availability of highly trained National Guard and Reserve members as part of the “Total Force”. As Vermont’s Adjutant General, I am responsible for preparing soldiers and airmen of the highest quality to serve when our nation calls. Our nation has called.

Recently I have been charged with preparing members of the Vermont Army National Guard who have been called to active duty at the direction of the President of the United States. They will serve for a period of one year. (This time period is subject to change.) These soldiers, highly skilled and trained, will preform duty in direct support of our nation’s efforts in counter terrorism. Your employee, SSG Eugene A. Wells, is one of the chosen few who have been able to meet that challenge and has the discipline, intellect and skill required to perform this critical mission.

As a civilian employer of a member of the Vermont National Guard, you have have made many sacrifices on behalf of our nation’s defense. Your outstanding support for our members of the National Guard has allowed our men and women to receive the highest quality training possible. Once again, I ask you for your support.

I will be asking the State Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve to contact you in the very near future. They are tasked by the Secretary of Defense to promote public understanding and support for the critical role of the Reserve components and to advance National interests and protect our nation’s top security. They will be able to answer your questions associated with the mobilization of our troops.

I salute you for all that you have done in supporting your employee and his or her role as a member of the Vermont National Guard. It is your continued support that will assure that our nation always has a strong defense.
